Ipoh - It's all about eating out

One of my collegemates passionately advertised Ipoh's food. It was as though there is no other place where good food can be found except in Ipoh.

And so... I headed to Ipoh few months back...

First up..

Salted Chicken - RM16

You guessed it right. It was the WHOLE chicken. It was not chopped. Luckily, it was soft enough to just tear it apart. I liked it. I think they used the five spices, tong kui, and of course salt. It would have tasted better if they had added some dried wolfberries. That will give a little sweetness to the chicken. Overall, it was pretty good. :)

Kueh Teow - RM3.20

The one thing I like about a small towns is that everything is cheaper than KL!! They used fresh sea clam and prawn while most places just use canned food. I'm sure they used seasame oil to fry it. Unhealty, but nice. yum!

Thai Bahulu - 10 for RM2

I love them because they are SMALL and CUTE! :) Yes, and it tasted nice too. There are a few flavours; Original, Blueberry, Pandan, Strawberry, and Chocolate. The nicest is still the Original one. The one with the Chocolate tasted WEIRD!

Ba gua Bread - RM1.40

Something rather depressing. For that price, I'll consider that expensive. There is nothing special about it. The ba gua is the minced meat type and not the sliced meat. In KL, I could get ba gua bread for RM2.20 and it's double this size, with cucumber and stuff. Like a Kebab, instead of beef/chicken it is ba gua. This is disappointing.

I found Woolley Food court and decided to try..

Bean Sprout - RM4
It was just super crunchy and fat.

Bak Kut Teh - RM7.50

This is just so-so. Nothing special. Just that it is half the price compared to the ones sold in KL.

And for breakfast the next day,

Har Kao - RM0.80 per piece

There were meat, carrot, and wood ear. It was really nice. I'll appreciate it if they put a few slices of ginger inside. It would have been better! :)

Chee Cheong Fan - RM3

LOVE IT! It's with minced meat and prawn. A different version from the one I had from Petaling Street. :)

Chicken Hor fan - RM3.50

Looks nice but it's not that nice afterall. :( I prefer the one beside my college. The soup was not tasty enough but the main problem was that the kueh teow was over cooked.

Lo Mai Kai - RM3

This looks simple and unappetizing but I was partly wrong. It consisted of a slice of Chinese sausage, one super FAT 3-layer-pork-meat (EEEWWWWWW), a piece of mushroom and a piece of chicken meat. I would say the Fatty meat was pretty disgusting to eat, but if you like fatty meat then perhaps you would say otherwise. The chicken meat was very well marinated. The rice on the other hand was a little too hard for my liking.

If I were to eat it again, I'll probably just dig for the chicken meat. :)

And..... (*drum rolls)

Tau Fu Fa - RM0.80

Cheap. That's all I can say about it. I don't really fancy tau fu fa, and neither can I tell the difference between the good ones and the bad ones.. I only take tau fu fa with chocolate chips. :) This was served with the sweet syrup which I presume is sugar (Gula Malacca) solution.

This is just a short 'Makan' trip. Overall, it was pretty good. I will admit that the food is SLIGHTLY better than the ones in KL but it is still of no comparison to the food from SARAWAK! :D

P/S: No-one from Ipoh was with me at that time, so perhaps I went to the wrong places. Will someone bring me to the right place so I'll change my judgment? :P

The salt chicken seems to be famous there - but I don't think I will enjoy it a lot. Doesn't seem like my cup of tea...and the bak kua bun at Jalan Alur looks nicer. The tau hu hua looks really good though - too bad you don't fancy that. Looks like you did not really enjoy the food there...so sad! No place like home, eh? LOL!!!

Hi Shirleen! Speaking about Ipoh foodies, I have an old old post about a rather famous chinese kopitiam at Ipoh. If you don't mind and got some time to spare, here is the link
